Staying Resilient in Tough Times: How to Keep Going

This is a quote from the book “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins. I previously introduced him in the previous article; you can check it out there. Now, let’s dive into the quote:

[…] But digging into the ‘Cookie Jar’ when things are going south takes focus and determination because at first the brain doesn’t want to go there. It wants to remind you that you’re suffering and that your goal is impossible.

To understand this quote, you need to know what the ‘Cookie Jar’ means. It’s a mental space where you store all your small and big victories. For instance, when you aced a challenging test or completed 100 push-ups in one go, you should store these wins in your ‘Cookie Jar’ (I don’t recommend boring your friends with all your stories about how amazing you used to be).

We all experience ups and downs, especially during the ‘ups,’ it’s crucial to recall something positive, something that will uplift your spirit.

You must utilize past successes to fuel yourself for new and bigger ones.

In the heat of battle, when things get tough, we need to draw inspiration to push through our own exhaustion, depression, pain, and misery.

We need to ignite a series of small fires to become an inferno.

When you feel lost, your mind may tell you it’s not worth the suffering and convince you to give up because your success seems implausible.

During these times, you need to draw upon the victories in your ‘Cookie Jar’ to serve as your small motivation to push through.
